National Student Financial Aid Scheme is the government students’ bursary and loan scheme that receives its funding budget from and reports to the Department of Higher Education and Training. The Scheme was established in terms of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme Act 56 of 1999. We provide financial Assistance in the form of bursaries and loans to eligible students at public universities and technical and Vocational Education and Training colleges in South Africa.

Important Dates for NSFAS Applications 2025-2026

You Will Need The Following Required documents to Apply for NSFAS 2025
- No need for evidence of income if you are an SASSA recipient
- Because of COVID-19 restrictions, certified documents are not required
- Copy of ID
- You have to have consent from the parent(s), guardian, or spouse to submit their personal information for validation and verification. As you agree to the applicable terms and conditions, you are certified that you have received consent from all relevant parties.
- If the applicant is dependent on their parents, guardian, or spouse, they must provide: ID copies of parent(s), guardian or spouse and the evidence of income of parents, guardian, or spouse (payslip or appointment letter, where applicable)
- If the applicant is self-sufficient, they have to provide: Proof of income (payslip or appointment letter) and 1 year’s IRP5 form
- Students with disabilities are to provide: A completed and signed Disability Annexure A Form (if their information is not pre-populated on the online application form).
- For those Vulnerable students (children under 18 years), they should also provide A completed and signed Vulnerable Child Declaration and Consent Form which should be completed by a social worker.
National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a government-run organization that reports to the Ministry of Higher Education and Training.
