About the Faculty
Welcome to the Faculty of the Arts. With its rich blend of theory and practice, our faculty is one of the University’s spires of excellence. Equipped with state-of-the art, custom-built facilities, the Faculty is staffed by highly regarded academics, artists and designers. These experts, our students and alumni are constantly re-inventing the creative arts, setting standards for others to follow.
Our creative energy is generated by the cultural diversity of our students, who come from different backgrounds and diverse geographies around the continent. We offer programmes in six creative disciplines, developing these fields outside their traditional confines through in-house and peripheral partnerships. The Breytenbach Theatre has a colourful history and has seen many uses – from its humble beginnings as a German Community Hall to a hospital and eventually as a film and artist’s studio.
In 1955 the National Theatre Organisation (NTO) acquired the building and turned it into its current form, a theatre. The first production opened on 17 November 1958. In 1967 it was renamed the Breytenbach Theatre in honour of Dr PPB Breytenbach (Oom Breytie), then chairman of the NTO. It quickly, and fondly, became known simply as “The Breytie”.
