Quantity surveying is a key discipline within the construction industry, playing a needed role in project management, cost estimation, and financial control. As the construction sector continues to make process with advancements in technology and methodologies, the demand for skilled quantity surveyors has never been higher. TUT is at the cutting edge of shaping the next generation of quantity surveyors through its original and well-rounded Quantity Surveying program.
Quantity surveyors are the financial consultants of the construction industry whose training and experience qualify them to advise on cost and contractual arrangements and to prepare contract documents. Quantity surveyors act in liaison with architects, consulting engineers and contractors to safeguard the client’s interest. They are independent experts who operate in a specialised area of the construction industry. They work closely with architects, engineers, contractors, and clients to provide accurate cost estimates, monitor project finances, and identify cost-saving opportunities.
The Quantity Surveying program at Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) is created to offer students the necessary knowledge and abilities to become professionals in the construction sector, particularly in the management and control of construction costs. The program is offered at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with the following qualifications available:
Course Description
Training to prepare full monthly payment certificates, payments for subcontractor’s work, and reports and to guide junior surveyors.

Students who intend to enrol for this qualification should take note that no new applications will be accepted from 2023. Potential students are advised to consult the University’s website for possible new qualifications which are aligned with the newly implemented Higher Education Qualification Sub-Framework.

Admission requirement(s):
A National Diploma: Building or an equivalent NQF Level 6 (old NQF and new HEQF) qualification obtained from an accredited South African university. Holders of any other equivalent South African or international qualifications may also be considered but will have to apply at least six months in advance for the recognition of such qualifications. Candidates will be required to submit an evaluation of their qualifications by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) with their application forms for admission. The University and/or Faculty reserves the right to assess these qualifications and the applicant’s suitability and/or competence for admission to the program. Depending on the nature of such an equivalent qualification, the completion of certain additional subjects may be required. Proof of English proficiency may be required.
