University of Toronto Application Deadline 2025-2026

The University of Toronto invites applications for its September 2025 and January 2026 intakes, with the online portal opening on 16 November 2025. To ensure thorough consideration and eligibility for a wider range of scholarships, applicants are advised to submit completed applications, along with all required documents, well ahead of the deadlines: 1 February 2025, for international applicants and 15 February 2025, for domestic applicants. Early submission also allows potential supervisors to evaluate your application thoroughly.

*Please note, the window for Winter 2025 admissions is now closed.

Per the guidelines on the ‘Application process’ page, scanned copies of transcripts from all attended universities are necessary for the departmental review. Alumni or current students of the University of Toronto are exempt from submitting their UofT transcripts, as these can be accessed by the Graduate Office post-application submission.

Admission Essentials for Aspiring Graduate Students

To embark on a graduate program, candidates need to secure a faculty member’s consent who will supervise and financially back their research endeavours. It’s highly recommended that applicants initiate contact with faculty members who share mutual research interests. For details on CSB Faculty with active research projects, please refer to the faculty list.

Admission decisions pivot on academic performance, indicated by transcripts, and research potential, as demonstrated by research history and reference letters. International PhD candidates generally receive precedence over international MSc applicants.

Should there be any uncertainties regarding eligibility for the CSB Graduate Program, potential applicants are encouraged to reach out to Ian Buglass or Madison Marshall at the CSB Graduate Office via grad.csb@utoronto.ca.

Master of Science (M.Sc.) Admission Details

Prospective M.Sc. students must meet the general admission requirements of the University of Toronto’s School of Graduate Studies (SGS). A recognized Bachelor’s degree with high academic standards is necessary. Beyond the SGS’s general admission prerequisites, candidates must maintain a minimum B+ average in their final undergraduate year, and at least a mid-B average in the preceding year. Post-application, connecting with potential departmental supervisors is crucial, as admission hinges on their support.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Admission Information

Admissions for the Ph.D. program are also under the general regulations of the University of Toronto’s SGS. Like M.Sc. applicants, PhD candidates must engage with prospective supervisors following their application. Admission into the CSB PhD program can be obtained through one of three pathways:

  • Transition from the CSB MSc Program: MSc students can switch to the PhD program after 12 months, with the transition occurring between the 12th and 20th month of the MSc studies.
  • Post-MSc Program Completion: Candidates with an MSc from a recognized university must hold an A- average or higher in their MSc coursework.
  • Direct Entry from a BSc: Exceptional BSc graduates (with at least an A- average at the University of Toronto or equivalent) may be considered for direct entry into the PhD program.
