A Bursary Application is a request for an investment in your education of up to half a million rand. the TUT is committed to supporting students’ educational journey through a variety of bursary programs. For the 2025-2026 academic year, TUT offers numerous bursaries designed to assist students from diverse backgrounds in achieving their academic goals. Applications for most bursary scholarship opportunities close on 30th September, However, there are some exceptions as indicated on the bursaries pages. this will guide the applicants on essential information on the types, eligibility and application processes to help your secure the funding you need.
Why Apply for a TUT Bursary?
Bursaries can help students who might face more barriers to accessing tertiary education. Since bursaries are awarded to students based on their circumstances and academic achievements, as well as the unique requirements of the bursary itself, they can be quite competitive.
Types Of Bursaries Available
A student merit bursary is regarded as a first payment towards fees. No application is required as students are identified by using the applicable rules or criteria.
Are awarded primarily or exclusively based on the applicant’s financial needs. As a result, the application process for these scholarships does not tend to extend far beyond disclosing the relevant financial information.

TUT Academic Merit Bursaries for New Entrant First-year Students 2025
- These bursaries are made available to newcomer students who enrol for a National Diploma or a B Tech degree at the University for the first time after Grade 12.
- Only South African citizens qualify for these bursaries.
- Students who enrol for non-subsidised courses, do not qualify for these bursaries.
- A student only qualifies for the bursary if they register for all the modules of a specific course.
- Students who have studied at other universities and those students who have already studied at the University and who are undergraduate students again, do not qualify for these bursaries.
- Allocations are made annually and should a student cancel their registration in the year they receive the award they will forfeit the allocation.
- Eligibility is determined by the average percentage of each subject on the Grade 12 certificate which will provide an accumulated discount based on the subjects passed on a certain level.

Academic Merit Bursaries for Undergraduate Returning Students: TUT Bursary Application 2025-2026
- These bursaries are awarded to undergraduate students who continue with their registration for National Diplomas and B Tech degrees at the University.
- Students who have been enrolled at other institutions previously could qualify as well, provided that they have obtained recognition for the subjects at the University.
- Only South African citizens qualify for these bursaries.
- Students who are enrolled on non-subsidised courses, do not qualify for these bursaries.
- Bursaries are awarded for prior academic performance provided the student registers again at the university for an undergraduate qualification.
- The average percentage of each subject is calculated according to the November results and an accumulated discount for all subjects passed on a certain level will be allocated as a bursary.
- Allocations will be made annually after the first registration and all the subjects that were registered for in the previous year are taken into consideration.

Academic Merit Bursaries for Postgraduate Returning Students: TUT Bursary Application 2025-2026
All funding will be administered according to the policies, rules and regulations stipulated by the Directorate: of Research and Innovation.
Payment of Bursaries 2025
All students who qualify annually shall automatically be awarded the bursaries, provided the funding is available.
Any credit balance may be refunded to the student if the student account is paid in full and they remain registered during the year they received the award and subject to bursary regulations of other donors e.g. NSFAS.

These bursaries are allocated to students who have proven exceptional leadership abilities and skills in the institution or their communities.

Allocation Rules and Criteria
- The Directorate of Student Leadership & Governance (SL&G) shall make bursary allocations within the specified terms of reference of the policy.
- This reflects on the leadership and talent of the Student Affairs and Extra-Curricular Development (SAED) approved activities in:

- Student Life & Governance
- Health & Wellness
- Accommodation, Residence Life & Catering
- The allocation shall exclude the Directorate of Sport & Recreation.
- The allocation shall exclude individuals in the roles of SRC and RC members.
- Students need to apply to the various SAED managers at each campus before a pre-determined date.
- Eligibility shall be determined by performance up to the end of December of the previous year.
- A pre-determined set of criteria shall be used by the screening committee to test eligibility.
- Students shall have completed a minimum of two-semester courses and shall have achieved a 55% average for all subjects registered;
- Full-time registration of any candidate shall be a prerequisite;
- A final decision on the number of students and the amounts allocated shall be taken by SL&G within the confines of the annual budget allocation.
- A student shall have to be involved in at least two (2) or more projects in the environment;
- At no point shall a bursary exceed the maximum award per student category within the confines of the amount allocated by the committee for the Leadership & Talent Bursaries.
- If a student qualifies for any other meritorious awards allocated by the University, the combined allocation shall not be more than their full cost of study for the academic year in which it is allocated.
- The list of recipient names shall be forwarded to the Directorate of Financial Aid to credit their student accounts.

- Any credit balance may be refunded, if permissible to the student if the student account is paid in full.
- The bursary may only be allocated once to any student during their enrolment at TUT.
- The Director of Student Leadership & Governance shall constitute a committee that will review the nominations for the Leadership & Talent Bursaries and make recommendations;
- The committee shall compromise of representatives from the following environments:

- A representative of SL& G Pretoria campuses
- A representative of SL& G in the distance campuses
- A representative of ARLC
- A representative of Health & Wellness
- A representative of the CSRC
